My QOTD; Unnecessarily complicated maintenance?

One of my bulbs went in my little corsa the other day, not a complicated job at all. Went to the store, picked up a couple of H4 bulbs and I got it sorted. 5 Minutes, boom. Done.

The friend who I was with at the time drives a 2004 Renault Megane. He thought he'd pick himself up some new bulbs for his, as one of his had gone. Took an hour and half. A LIGHTBULB. Nearly the entire front end had to come off to change the light.

I'm intrigued to know now. What jobs have you either performed yourself or seen performed that are hilariously complicated?

Fifth Gear actually had a race — changing the headlamp in a Renault Megan vs a VW Golf.

Don't even get me started, genuine flagship french shit.

Changing out the headlight bulb's in the driver's side headlight in an '04 Elantra requires the battery to be removed.

Thats the exact model that he owned. The bulbs only cost £15 a pair for the both of us. Mine we're fitted faster than the kettle boiled but his would of cost him another £50 in labour had he not done it himself. Silly stuff

That's just safe procedure, removing the electrical potential from the circuit before changing the bulb.

I remember fitting a head unit to my friends E46. The entire glovebox assembly had to come off and half the dash had to come out and even then access was shit.

My mam had one for 3 years. I maintained it for her and drove it a few times. It was reasonably comfortable but otherwise had no redeeming features whatsoever. Hated it.

Oh it gets better. Towards the end of the video, he calls around various Renault dealers and gets quotes. If you have Xenons, it'll cost you £290 plus VAT — or around £320 — because they have to remove the front bumper, and it's quoted 1.2 hours of labor.

Meanwhile, at the very end he removes the Golf's lamp single-handed while drinking tea. Hahaha

FUCKING KNEW IT! It gives you some idea of perspective though! Cost us both nothing to do but time but clearly the french see time a little more valuable than others!

That makes me miss my jeep. Just pop off the bezel, slide in the keys, and I could swap in a stereo in under 3 minutes. Good thing, because they kept getting stolen!

I get the feeling that there's one aspect of every car that manufacturers made complicated on purpose. I bet there's something on a jeep that's notoriously hard to do, compared to everything else.

Regular bulbs were between £30-60.

If I ever move across the pond, remind me to never buy a Renault.

Granted, I don't think I'd ever buy a French car, anyways.

My car's driving lights are the same way. They are visible from underneath the car, but the gap between the front clip and the radiator/brace isn't wide enough to get your hand in. You have to undo the front bumper.

Working on any transverse V6 is close to impossible. Stuff like changing spark plugs or replacing the valve cover gasket, which would normally take an hour suddenly takes a week!

In some Hondas you have to turn the wheels to change the headlight and other bulbs inside that assembly.

I heard that changing the bulbs in an Mk4 Golf/Jetta also requires removing the bumper.

Many small fwd cars are like this. Blame emissions regs, sound proofing and maximising passenger space. In addition headlight bulbs are quite long and need a fair amount of space behind the light to work with.

Top tip: hope that your screen washer pump never fails. They're usually a nightmare.

I think my screenwash pump is right next to my reservoir, after a quick google it's essentially; bleed the system, remove old pump, check and or replace mounts, fit new one, reconnect, refill system, done.

Definitely agree with you, it does seem to be a trait of small fwd cars to be painful when it comes to replacing stuff

Most small cars nowadays - and some not so small - have the reservoir hidden between the inner and outer wings and the bumper has to come off for access.

There's a fitting at the top of the driver's side on the 944's radiator that you can't see and that will leak like a sieve if you accidentally pinch the gasket or forget to put it on.

Hatehatehatehatehate.
